Artist Bio

Nóra Somos is a Helsinki based visual artist. She is a painter, working mainly with oil colours, and drawing with a variety of techniques. She was born and raised in Hungary and started her fine arts education at the Visual Arts Faculty of the University of Pécs, where she studied painting for a year before she moved to Finland in 2022.

Somos is currently doing her third year of Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the University of the Arts Helsinki, Academy of Fine Arts.

Somos’ artworks aim to evoke the imagination. In her most recent body of work, her paintings are figurative, using bold colours, depicting human or animal-like characters and creatures.  She explores themes such as love, care, rite,  the living and moving body, femininity and interpersonal relaitonships.

In the past years she has been particularly interested in the concept of world building through art, creating lore by painting. These made up mythologies are narrative but elusive. Her symbolism is a mixture of ideas inspired by folklore, art history, religion, contemporary culture, and the artist's subjective life experience. Somos wants to tell stories that are forever in formation and believes freely expressed, unregulated symbolism can open doors to both personal and collective imagination. Stories suggested in paintings can’t be set in stone, as they are only visual material, colors and forms merging, giving the perfect space for evolving narratives.

Somos’ work has been displayed in group shows both in Hungary and in Finland. She has most recently participated in exhibitions in Helsinki, such as Hourglass, Vapaan Taiteen Tila, in 2023, Between Us, Kuva/Tila, in 2024, and Painting as Habitat, Kuva/Tila, in 2025.
